The perfect time to visit the Kii Peninsula is during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild, and the beautiful cherry blossoms and autumn foliage are at its peak. However, off-season travel from December to February still has abundant travel offerings.
The Kii Peninsula is located on the island of Honshu in Japan within the Kansai region. It is 120 minutes from Kyoto and 180 minutes from Tokyo via plane. If you are beginning the trip from Wakayama, it is best to fly to Nanki Shirahama airport.
There are plenty of activities available in the Kii Peninsula. The Kii region is brimming with culturally and spiritually significant landmarks to visit including the UNESCO Kumano Kodo trail and various sacred shrines and temples. Additionally, there are many activities available celebrating Kii’s unique heritage including ninja museums, washi-paper making classes, Ama diver hut experiences, onsens (hot springs), sushi making classes and a variety of other culturally immersive activities.
The official Kii Peninsula tourism site is still under construction. However, the three main prefectures of the Kii region have tourism sites available.

Hongu Taisha Spring Festival 2025
When you walk the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails, located in the south of Wakayama Prefecture, you come to Hongu Town and the Hongu Taisha, one of the Three Kumano Grand Shrine. If your walk happens in mid-April, then you might have a chance to witness the Hongu Taisha Spring Festival. This event is a local spectacle that is rarely swarmed by visitors like other spring festivals in Japan. Therefore, this festival is incredibly culturally immersive since you mingle with locals and witness the traditional prayer rituals and spiritual ceremonies. F1 Japanese Grand Prix 2025
The Formula One Grand Prix returns to Japan. The Japanese Grand Prix will see the practice rounds of the drivers and the qualifying race before the actual race takes place. Wakayama All Meat Festa 2025
Meat-based dishes are extremely popular in Japan and the Kii Peninsula is no different with meats like Matsusaka Beef and Kumano Chicken as regional specialties. The All Meat Festival in Wakayama serves as a celebration of this, and over a million people attend each year. Around 60 stalls will be at the event serving up all manner of tasty eats, along with stage performances, wine tasting, and even a kids play area. The festival will operate on weedays from 12pm until 9pm, but on weekends that extends to 10am until 9pm, throughout late March 2025.
The Shirahama Light Parade
The Shirahama Light Parade is a spectacular annual event where the streets and beachfront of Shirahama are illuminated with colourful lights and lanterns. The parade features dazzling floats adorned with intricate light displays, traditional Japanese decorations, and performances such as taiko drumming and traditional dance. The atmosphere the parade creates is enchanting with the glow of lanterns and lights against the backdrop of the beach and ocean. Locals and visitors alike attend and enjoy the music and dance at this summer event, running from early November to Late December 2024.
